Episode 1:
The town crier went about announcing the time of curfew in the village of Erin. The Oro (masquerade) is going to be unleashed the following night and anyone caught wandering about would be captured as the gods’ sacrifice.
Sitted in his compound, Baba Adetoun was enjoying his discussions with his friend Baba Aduni over a keg of palmwine. They were laughing when the women returned from the farm.
“Good evening my husbands, hope the village meeting went well?” The annual village meeting comprises elders from the three joined villages of Erin, Ajatala and Eruku. The central and biggest of them all was Erin. Most of the kings come from Erin, presiding over the three sister villages while Baales’ rules over the rest. “The meeting was good Iya Adetoun. As you have heard the town crier going round announcing the outcome..” before he could say more, Baba Adetoun cut in “please get us more palmwine and meat Iya Adetoun before I suffocate from a dry throat”. She turned and hurried off into the thatched kitchen to get it.
“Here is the wine my husband”. She placed the wine on the stool and signaled to her sister and her maids to follow her out the compound. After an hour of disappearance, they walked back in with Adetoun. “What is all these woman?” Baba Adetoun asked his wife as he saw her dragging in his daughter by the ear. “Let me deal with her my husband…she has left us in the farm to fetch water and ought to have been home over an hour ago but we found her by the bushy road path with that useless boy Falolu. Let me teach her a lesson.” Iya Adetoun was furious as she further pulled her pleading daughter towards the house. “Let her be woman...Must you pull out her ears to discipline her”. Adetoun knelt before her father to apologise and thank him. He waved her off and asked his wife to see to his bathing water while he finishes his conversation with his friend.
In the other part of Erin village in the home of the Chief Priest, Falolu who is one of the most experienced student of Ifa jumped in over the fence. He was sneeking back in when he heard footsteps behind him. He turned around to search when he noticed a shadow by the stacks of firewood. Carefully unalerting the follower, he maneuvered to grab him from the back. It was Falola, a little brother in Ifa. “How long have you been following me Falola”…he scolded and pinched into the boy’s wrist. Falola now wincing and begging to be free “for more than a week now brother…please stop, you are hurting me”. Falolu became furious for being so dumb not to have noticed. “If I leave you, you mustn’t tell anyone of it”. “Which part shouldn’t I tell?” Falola asked with a mocking smile. “Are you daft?....None of whatever you saw or I’ll break your bones, tell it was an accident and realign them again”. He shoved the boy towards the house after handing him a bunch of firewood and then followed carrying another.
This past week was the best he had experienced all his life finding his perfect love ‘Adetoun’. Getting through the night and waiting all day for the evening to arrive just to see her beautiful face tomorrow was like torture to his heart. He was going to tell her how much he loved her no matter how stupid it would sound because she must feel the same for him with all her warm smile. “Brother, brother, Baba has called for you” Falolu was drawn back from his thoughts by a young boy who informed him that Father Fabunmi, the chief priest demanded his presence at once.
